“Matt is happy being a part of the River Rock program, and that means the world to us!” – Matt’s mother, Gail
Matt is 36 years old and has been a part of the River Rock Adult Day Program at Camp Cheerful since 2018. He missed coming to Camp during the short time it was closed during the Pandemic but appreciated the special programming offered virtually through Zoom and being able to continue to see his friends. Matt was the first participant to return in person and now looks forward to spending time with his friends each day at Camp Cheerful.
Gail spoke about their family’s earlier struggles after Matt was born to find the right programs at school and outside activities that their son would be interested in and could fully participate in. “We are so happy to see Matt looking forward to and enjoying each day in his River Rock program! Matt sometimes has difficulty with changes or trying new things, and we feel that with all that the River Rock program offers, it has helped him feel confident and happy to try and learn new things.”
Matt has a very sharp memory and knows exactly what is on the schedule of activities each day. The special activities Matt especially enjoys are going to the barn and helping with the horses’ care, nature hikes outside, learning in the new computer lab, and exercising with Jacob’s Ladder. He loves being active, loves sports, and being helpful in many different ways around Camp. He was especially thrilled when the group visited the Cleveland Browns training camp this past summer through the Camp’s Adapted Sports Program.
The River Rock caregiving team has an Individual Service Plan (ISP) for each participant to help them continue their learning while at Camp and after they go home. Matt’s most recent evaluation reported, “Matt takes pride in being able to help others at his day program and enjoys being able to do things with his friends. He is a valued member at River Rock and has built very strong relationships with staff and his friends that are there.” When asked who his favorite staff member is, Matt replied, “Everyone.”
